（４）Villette was the last novel Charlotte Bronte wrote before her unitimely death, and her most mature.
It has become a key text in contemporary feminist criticism, for reasons that are very obvious in this passage.
But in defamiliarizing the representation of women in this historical painting Charlotte Bronte was making a point about art as well as about sexual politics, and specifically about her own art ,which had gradually and painfully emancipated itself from the falsifications and wish-fulfilments of melodrama and romance.
"Iｔ seemed to me ," says Lucy Snowe just before this passage, "that an original and good picture was just as scarce as an original and good book." Villette is such a book.

 What do we mean－it is a common term of praise －when we say that a book is "original"? 

Not, useally, that the writer has invented something without precedent, but that she has made us "perceive" what we already,in a conceptual sence,"know",by deviating from the conventional, habitual ways of representing reality.
Defamiliarization, in short,is another word for "originality".

（４）「ヴィレッテ」はシャロッテ・ブロンテが早すぎた死の前に書いた最後の小説で、内容的にも一番円熟しています。この経過からも明らかな色々の理由で、この小説は現代のフェミニスト批判の重要なものとなりました。しかし、この歴史的絵画における女性表現からの遠のかせを行う中で、シャロッテ・ブロンテは芸術や性のポリティックスに関してある考えを述べようとしており、メロドラマやロマンスについての歪曲や願望達成から徐々に苦痛を感じながらも解放していくような彼女自身の芸術については特にそういうものであった。

この経過の直前にルーシー・スノーは、「独創的で優れた絵画は独創的で優れた書籍と同じぐらい少ない」と言っている。「ヴィレッテ」はそのような本であった。

よく聞く褒め言葉で、ある本が「独創的」であるという時、どういうことを言っているのであろうか？

作者が何も前例のないものを生み出すということは普通少なく、普通の陳腐な現実描写を離れることにより、我々がすでに感覚的な意味で知っていることを我々に「感知」させたのであった。遠のかせ（Defamiliarization）とは、簡単に言えば、「独創性」を別の言葉で言ったものである。
